Graduated, now what?

Do Internships Count as Work Experience?

While looking for entry-level positions after graduation, internships are highly valued by employers. Your practice gives you valuable experience that will set you apart from other entry-level applicants. Internships of any duration, whether paid or unpaid, are acceptable forms of work history. Internships look great on applications since they demonstrate initiative and the desire to develop professionally.

Do Internships Count as Work Experience?
As a matter of fact, yes they do. After all, internships are an opportunity for students to gain real world experience by joining companies, and understanding how things work. They also learn new skills, and they definitely work on and contribute to some actual projects.
It is irrelevant that you were a paid intern or an unpaid one. You still did that internship to gain the experience to get the next level job. The knowledge you gain here is definitely a step up than your university studies. But there are still some factors to be considered to call your internship a real work experience.

What was the nature of your internship?
Were you hired on a contractual basis or as a regular employee? If you we hired on a contract basis you will have to mention that accordingly under Internship section. But if you worked as an employee, your experience would be counted under the Experience section.
Even though there would not be much difference but transparency on the nature of your internship will help you in the long run.

How much time did you spend at work as an Intern?
There are different timings for interns in every company. Some have a flexible work structure, some have a scheduled one. They are also called part-time and full time internships. The number of months you spent at the internships also matter. Range of a month up to three months looks like less impressive as against an internship ranging from six months to a year.
A substantial amount of experience at internship counts more than a regular one that students do just to get higher grades. Not that you shouldn’t mention that 3-month internship on your CV, but let’s be realistic here, one year looks much impressive.

Do they convert into full time jobs?
Yes, they do! If you work and train well, if you are diligent and smart worker, by the end of your internship, you will land a job at the same office as a permanent employee. How awesome is that? That is also one way of considering your internship as a real experience. On the basis of the productivity and outcome of your work, you are assessed accordingly, leading to a full time job.

There is a difference between and Internship and a Vocational job.
Yes, you read that right. You might have worked at an animal shelter in college or just because you love animals, but that isn't as important for your CV as your internship experience is. When it comes to real work, it's important to only mention the relevant details.
You can show data from your internship, but for a job in software engineering, can you show data from that animal care house? No I suppose.

Internships have become very important in recent years. Students are advised and encouraged to find one as soon as they reach the end of their courses or degrees while still in university. Companies require at least some experience and hesitate to hire a basic fresher.
By including your internship experience on the CV, you are paving new career path for yourself in the longer run, so take that very seriously!
