How to Create a Consultant Internship CV

As a graduate, understanding the consulting sector and its roles can help you create an effective consulting internship CV. Consultants help businesses of all kinds to improve the way they run. Consultant internships can be found in both big and small consulting firms, in both the private and public sectors, and in a variety of industries. But for that you must ave a strong CV. This article provides valuable consulting internship CV tips to help you craft a strong application.
How to Create a Consultant Internship CV

Consulting CV Writing Tips for Internship

A solid CV is essential to getting an internship or job in consulting sector. While it may seem obvious, plenty of individuals who apply for consulting positions fail to put enough effort into creating strong consulting CVs. A majority of applicants will be eliminated immediately after reviewing their professional profiles. Thus, the CV is statistically the most important factor in the hiring process.

CV plays a significant role in determining which candidates are invited to interview, even at places like McKinsey where most applicants are required to take the Solution test and pass it before any significant cut is made.

Understanding the proper CV format is crucial. Your CV, if you're applying for a consulting internship, should be well-organised and show that you're really interested in contributing to the success of the company. Here are some tips for putting together and tailor a winning application for internships in the consulting industry:

Contact Information

Put your contact information at the top of your CV so that potential employers and recruiters can easily find you. Identify yourself by providing your full name, phone number, email address, and the name of the city and country in which you now reside. Including your entire street address is unnecessary.

Professional Summary

Your professional summary should be no more than three sentences long and should focus on your most marketable attributes. Experience in the field is also welcome. If you're applying for a job, it could help to write about a professional goal of yours and how you see it benefiting the company you're targeting or how well you see yourself fitting in with the company's culture. It's basically a personal statement displaying your best traits.

Education

Consultancy firms' recruiting managers and recruiters often look for applicants having at least a bachelor's degree. Due to the diverse nature of the sectors that use a consultant's services, there is no one set of academic credentials that will guarantee an internship in the field but relevant qualification is a must. It is contingent upon the nature of the business and the industry in which it operates. You can list your degrees earned, major(s) pursued (if relevant), and schools attended in reverse chronological order in the Education section of the CV. Any relevant certificates you may have received can also be included.

If you have varied degrees, list them all with a short description for them. That will strengthen your professional profile. Interns typically have fewer than three years of experience, therefore it's important to highlight your educational background immediately following your professional overview.

When your work history is lacking, it's more crucial than ever to highlight your academic accomplishments on your CV. You can rearrange the sections of your CV as your career develops, moving the schooling section to the end. If you have more than three years of experience, highlight your job history.

Work Experience

An interning consultant CV can include any relevant job experience you have to demonstrate that you have held before while volunteering or otherwise, similar to the one you are applying for. Your work history should be listed in reverse chronological order, beginning with your most recent or present position. Specify the company name you worked for, the city and province or territory you were based in, your job title, and the dates you were employed there.

Include three or four bullet points under each entry to elaborate on your duties and successes in that position. Think about the talents you gained that are applicable outside of the consulting industry. Professional experience might involve unpaid work such as internships or volunteering.

Skills and Expertise

An intern's CV isn't complete without a section dedicated to their expertise. Recruiters and hiring managers from top consulting firms place a premium on candidates who can demonstrate proficiency in a variety of key skills. By listing the skills required for the job, you not only show that you have them, but also that you know what a good consulting intern should have. You can put all of your skills on one line, or you can use two lines to separate them into groups.

Having both technical and interpersonal abilities on your CV will assist you greatly in making it past the rounds of interview. Hard skills are concrete abilities, some of which may be unique to a given field. Hard skills are typically acquired by taking a course or gaining experience on the job. One example of a hard skill is the ability to use technology and software. Soft skills, like being able to work as a team, communicate well, and pay attention to details, are less specific and more useful than hard skills.

Check your CV format for errors

Your CV needs to be carefully proofread before submission. Recruiters and hiring managers are more likely to be impressed by applicants whose CVs are error-free and written in plain English. Clear CVs pass the applicant tracking systems easily, and help you stand out from other applicants.

You can go through it on your own, with a friend or family member, or with a computer program that reads aloud. Your CV template should also be easy to open and download. A reverse chronological CV is recommended that charts your latest achievements on the top. You must take care of this while writing your CV.

Quantify your Results

It is imperative to employ quantitative measures in order to accurately assess and evaluate various phenomena and variables. Consultants exhibit a strong inclination towards the quantification of several aspects. A significant aspect of their professional responsibilities entails the analysis and manipulation of numerical data in order to substantiate the concepts they provide to their clientele. It is advisable to recently graduated students to leverage this opportunity in your CV and list your experience outputs to the greatest extent feasible.

For instance, if you received a scholarship for the purpose of pursuing studies overseas, it would be advisable to compose a statement along the lines of: "Granted the prestigious (Name of the Institute) Scholarship, which facilitated the opportunity to engage in academic pursuits within the United Kingdom. Notably, only two scholarships were awarded out of over 600 candidates for this prize."
