Crafting Your Profile

5 Tips to Proofread your CV

Proofreading your curriculum vitae is an important step for all job seekers, no matter how experienced they are or if they are writing their first CV or updating the one they already have. Your CV is a way to introduce yourself. It gives a brief overview of your professional life, highlighting the most important perspectives and skills training that make you the best person for the job.
Language is important, correct language is even more important. Candidates cannot simply take their professional profiles for granted when it comes to the content they are feeding to create it. It must hold the professional impact that would help employers take you seriously.

Graduatewise.com, the marketplace for candidates and employers alike, to connect with each other for job requirements, has this amazing feature. It creates candidate CV out of the information they put in respective sections like About Myself, Education, Skills, etc.
I am sure you would agree to the fact that entering correct information is non-negotiable. Mistakes of any kind in your CV are simply out of question.

So how can candidates proofread their data before submitting or saving it on portals? Let’s go through some essentials of proofreading, so you don’t lose your chances of grabbing the jobs.

1.    Fix Grammar Mistakes

-    Keep the tenses consistent as per the time frame of your previous (past tense) or current (present tense) jobs.
-    All proper nouns must be capitalised.
-    Make sure that you spell out the numerical/s in words as well, especially if they are 10 onwards.
-    From 1-10 you can mention in numerals.
-    Also date formats should be consistent.

2.    Review Punctuation Carefully

-    Ending the statements with period, no matter what.
-    Spacing between words and sentences should remain same, not any wider or narrower in between.
-    Do not use exclamation marks in your CV as it represents emotions. We don’t want to emote our professional profiles.
-    Use punctuation marks as and how necessary with proper commas, colons, brackets, etc.

3.    Check All Spelling

-    Most important of all, check each and every spelling, including your name and address too.
-    Use simple words if you are not sure of a new word’s meaning and importance.
-    Use spell check tools once you are done with your CV creation, so any mistakes can be corrected.

4.    Make Sure Contact Details Are Correct

-    You cannot afford to mention incorrect name, contact number, email address or residence details. Double check them before submitting.
-    Keep the spacing correct and consistent.
-    If you hold any prior volunteering or freelancing work experience, use the correct dates and date format as well.

5.    Review the Overall Layout of Your CV

-    Any accolades or awards that you’ve won, mention them date by date in correct format.
-    Keep the fonts simple and up to 12 number at the max.
-    Avoid underlining or bolding the words, unless absolutely necessary. In fact, avoid underlining altogether.
-    Avoid mentioning salary details (past as well as expected).
-    Keep the details to the point instead of writing essays.
-    Read it backwards once complete, and read it aloud, so you know what you have written there.

These are some basic yet essential tips while revising your CV details. One thing that you don’t have to worry about is, the format of CV. Graduatewise.com does that for you, which eliminates one big hassle. Additionally you can always take help from internet tools as well your friends to go through your details in case they catch any other errors to be corrected.
Even the smallest mistake on your CV could prevent you from getting shortlisted. As per the employers, if you cannot stay aware and alert while creating your own profile, how would you contribute to a greater cause?

Following these tips will surely help you submit the best as well as error free version of yourself. To know more on this, reach out to us at employability@internwise.com.
