8 Vital Skills for Graphic Design Interns
Is graphic design something you'd like to pursue as a profession after completing your studies? While you search for internship for the same, consider your growth in this field. It is not just creating logos and designing websites, but much more, including coding and branding.

For many creative people, graphic design is a great career choice, even though it is also getting increasingly competitive. A successful job as a graphic designer, ideally requires a proper set of abilities. Mastering those skills can help you become a valued expert in the area.

1. Creativity

It's hard to argue with the fact that creativity is one of the most important aspects of designing. If you lack an imaginative streak, then you won’t be able to deliver the results as required. Its agreed that coming up with fresh ideas and unique designs requires efforts. If you don't realise how to delve into your own creative capabilities, it's important to have a keen eye for detail, no matter what media you use.

2. Typography:

More than ever, the ability to create written form that is not only readable but also visually pleasing is highly wanted and recognised.
Anyone can buy every font possible online these days, but a designer with substantial experience and knowledge of font manufacturing will be more effective.

3. Proficiency in Design Software

There are a lot of graphic arts skills that are based on Adobe's Creative App. Several graphic design professions demand knowledge of Adobe's creative technologies. Mostly including Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. Graphic designers are increasingly utilising the programme since its widely used.

4. Interactive Design Skills

Text, moving images, animation, video, audio, and video games are all examples of interactive media. There is no shortage of free videos for the same. You can learn a lot through them without having to spend large amount of money. Do your best to educate yourself with as many forms of media as you possibly can.

5. Understanding of Color Theory

It's no secret that colours are the foundation of any design. Colour theory allows all designers to take full use of this medium. A reader's instinctive judgments are influenced by the subconscious psychological effects of every shade. Lighting and shadows are also included in the colour theory, as well as the impacts they have on the audience.

6. Communication Skills

Everything a designer produces relies on the designer's ability to interact, yet it's not just about data visualisation. For a design to be effective, it must take into account what the customer wants. It is important for designers to be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas to their clients, colleagues and team members in a clear and concise manner.

7. Marketing and Promotional Skills

One must know how to create flyers for businesses as they are usually the first step for any kind of promotions. You can show case your skills as below:
  • Brochures and flyers for non-profit organisations and charitable activities.
  • Flyers and booklets for forthcoming university events.
  • Create and design multimedia marketing fliers.
  • Build business brochures and educational pamphlets from scratch.

8. Basic Coding Knowledge

Coding has become a part of designing these days. Through HTML your skills can be of great use in:
  • Digitally enhancing photographs, web placards, and troubleshoot HTML.
  • Modify existing HTML email subscription layouts and add banners to comply with company's marketing strategy.
  • Using HTML, ColdFusion, and JavaScript, you can update static information on the company website.
  • Restructuring the HTML for the email newsletter, adding comments.

The skills listed above are, of course, just the tip of the iceberg. As you work your way up the ladder to becoming a professional graphic designer, these are the most important skills you need to have. Work on them diligently to get your desired internship as a designer.
