Grabbing Interview Opportunities

How to answer, “What Are You Passionate About?”

Always be genuine when addressing the interview question "What are you passionate about?" and when it's acceptable, explain how your response will make you an asset to the company. No matter how uncomfortable it is at first, it's important to introduce oneself.

How to answer, “What Are You Passionate About?”
One of the most important of questions asked in a Job Interview, but it sure makes you, as a candidate think and answer carefully. It's true that no one wants to share their personal interests with strangers, especially when they are interviewing you. But it also means that you realise your formal passion and interests and that you can definitely speak about them in a way that interests the panel.

The idea behind putting up such a question is to know the candidate better. It's not necessary that they want to hear something favourable only. It's just that they would like to understand what your life is like, apart from your CV. Instead of feeling awkward about answering the question, put forth your reply in a manner that makes your passion looks like a source of strength to you. Your answer should be genuine. For example, just to impress the interviewer, don’t simply mention that you love watching the morning sun, when in all actually you probably sleep at 4.00 am daily.

Here are a few tips on how to answer the question ‘What Are You Passionate About?’
1.    Know what you are passionate about
Try not to sound bland and uninterested. Come up with something that you really love to do, and about which you can speak up confidently. If at all you can’t come up with anything, there is no harm in talking about something that you do the most when you have time on your hands. It could be trying out new food, or simply watching films. Just make sure that you sound excited about whatever you are letting them know.

2.    The Why of the Passion
Explain why you are passionate about trying out new food or watching movies. It could be that you love food, which makes you a curious person, and that you don't not hesitate in taking risks. Or that you love to watch films to de-stress yourself or know more about socio-economic status, the culture and history of a place, etc., which may make you look like a person who is interested in the thinking deeply about things. So, things won’t take a negative note unless you talk about them negatively. If you are excited, that is something positive, right?

3.    What are you doing about it?
Try to speak a little about taking actions about your passion. If you think the society needs your help after watching a movie based on the issue, and you have volunteered at a company for the same, explain that to the interviewers. Seeing that you practice your passion fruitfully will always have a positive impact on the panel. This shows your commitment to anything that you work on.

4.    Link it to your Job
Finally, round about the explanation about how your passion can help you with your job too. Like volunteering at this centre that you spoke about, you can connect the company to that cause, helping with the CSR activity of the company. The said activity can help with the much-needed branding and publicity of the company, making it beneficial for them. Who would want to let go of such a chance? And this would make you seem like genuine candidate, who knows how to turn his passion into something of use.

Explaining what interests you the most will take may be just 5 minutes on the whole. But working through it with ease and excitement will help them understand you as a person better. That increasing your chances of being a potential candidate to hire. Learning to turn a simple hobby into a great passion is a skill to have, and candidates must understand this. More often than not, it’s the simple questions that catch you, and by answering them smartly you can land the internship easily.
