8 Questions Interns must ask their Manager on their First Day at Work
Getting started with a virtual internship might be difficult. It's hard to know the team, the projects they are working on, internal communication channels, and most importantly, what's expected of new workers. Uncertainty can be a hindrance. But I found through interviewing over 300+ people, it can also open up opportunities. An opportunity to your eagerness to achieve is provided by uncharted area or unclear expectations.
Listed below are a few questions new workers may ask their boss to ensure their success in a new position. Each one will help you have a better grasp of your situation.

1.    Can you please explain a little about my monthly, quarterly and half-yearly goals to be achieved?
They already have an idea of how soon they want you to grow. Your boss doesn't have to make it explicit in his or her remarks about your performance. Clarifying your intentions might help you stay on top of things.

2.    Who'd be my reporting manager?
Consider asking your bosses, "How should I divide my time between you two?" if you are supposed to report to multiple bosses. This will effectively stop others from thinking you are working solely for them, and therefore, overloading you.

3.    As a team, how should we work together on a daily basis?
There are various demands from different bosses. Always ask, "Would it be useful for us to have a regular one on ones?" "Which is more practical, weekly or monthly?"

4.    "What have your top achievers done to make your life simpler that you'd recommend I do as well?"
As well as helping you grasp your manager's work habits, such a query might demonstrate you want to gain knowledge and execute better.

5.    Can we please have a meeting with people working on these assignments before? I'd appreciate it if you could introduce us."
Inheriting someone else's work while not knowing their techniques and procedures may be a difficult experience. A conversation with your seniors can save you several hours of research and guesswork later on in the process.

6.    If I have access to a certain folder, should I study the files/templates and utilise them?
There could be several files and folders. Knowing which ones are important and which ones should be used may save you hours of searching (and reworking).

7.    How about sending me a copy of the future meeting invites you believe I should attend?
For newcomers, it's vital to be seen and acknowledged. You can't understand workings until you're present in discussions. By not asking, you risk being missed and missing important meetings that others require you to attend.

8.    Would it be possible to obtain a current organisation chart or team list?
The more you know about your new environment's ideologies, and the organisation structure, the easier it will be to manage it.

Even the most well-intentioned manager can appear careless and scatterbrained at times, but its your responsibility to initiate such conversations for a smooth onboarding. In the end, the consequence is a work environment that rewards proactive behaviour. Take charge of things and enable yourself if you can't find anyone who is willing to help.
