Making the Right Career Decision after Graduation
There are countless opportunities in the workforce just waiting to be chosen by you. The availability of numerous choices is both a blessing and a curse. That's why breaking things down into smaller chunks can assist. Following these eight guidelines, you'll be better prepared to evaluate your career options and make a well-informed decision.

1. Reflect thoroughly on your own identity.
It's uncomfortable to talk about your talents and limitations, yet it's essential for your future success in the workplace. Get some alone time by going somewhere peaceful. Consider your interests, values, and intangible abilities. Now is a wonderful time to make a list of your strengths.
Ask your hypothetical future self about their ideal routine and daily activities. Find jobs that suit your interests. Find out what kinds of occupations would suit your interests and lifestyle by taking an aptitude test.

2. Generate a comprehensive list of potential occupations.
You now have some direction after taking so many career assessments. Put them down on paper in any order you like and give them a thorough reading. Think about what you've discovered about yourself and how your traits line up with the jobs listed below.
Taking stock of your professional and personal ideals might also prove beneficial. Certain occupations may be easily eliminated, while others may spark your curiosity. It's possible that some of the occupations on this list will not even occur to you. When delving deeper into potential professions, compiling your possibilities is a great place to begin.

3. Get going on looking at that list
  • Now that you have some job paths to consider, it's time to do some preliminary reading on them. As you weigh your choices, here are some things to consider:
  • In what cities might one find such employment possibilities?
  • Could they make you move to a certain area?
  • Do you really want it to happen?
  • In what ways should one prepare themselves academically for work in this area?
  • Do you work long or short hours?
  • How would you describe the typical way of life?
  • How much money can I anticipate to make?
You may also need to refine your focus. You may know for sure that you want a career in healthcare but be less confident about which specific position would best suit you.

4. Condense your bullet points
While you explored your employment alternatives in the previous stage, you likely ran into some roadblocks. The good news is that if you do your homework, you can whittle down your options and make a more informed choice. Try to think of at least five different occupations.
If you haven't done so already, try leaving behind positions that require you to perform tasks you don't enjoy or that have other prerequisites you'd rather not meet.

5. Speak with experts in the subject
Conversations with people already working in the field you're considering can provide invaluable information that simply reading about the work involved won't. You may benefit from the advice they give you because it is based on their first-hand experience and honesty. When you network with other people, you can inquire about their methods of time management and how they maintain a good work-life balance.
Inquire about their transition into the field, or how they were promoted to their current position, if they are new to the industry. Having someone to talk through your job possibilities with can help you make a more informed choice. If you're struggling to make sense of this daunting choice and want to keep moving forward in your career, a BetterUp coach can help.

6. Evaluate your life's ambitions
Consider the consequences of your plans for both your career and your personal life.
Do you hope to be home with your loved ones frequently? Then perhaps you shouldn't choose a profession that requires much travel.
If you want to know who you are beyond your work title, you need to know what you want out of life. Jot down your long-term and short-term aspirations and make sure your job prospects will allow you to fulfil them.

7. Decide on a profession.
It's decision time in terms of your professional future. But hold on if you aren't prepared to do so. It is acceptable to take additional time or conduct further research. Have faith in the time and thought you've put into this decision, and know that it's not a final one with no turning back. Individuals of all ages and stages of life frequently switch occupations.
You shouldn't feel stuck because of this choice.

8. Create a written strategy.
What steps will you do next to advance in your chosen field once you've reached your conclusion? It's not enough to know the job you desire; you also need a plan for how to get there. Put your to-do list on paper.
How many credentials are necessary for you to execute your job?
Creating a detailed plan will help you estimate how much money and time you will need to get started.
