Crafting Your Profile

Importance of Work Experience on Your CV

Gaining work experience allows you to put your knowledge and abilities to use. You can use your accomplishments on a CV to advance in your chosen field. You can put your youthful energy to good use by making an early entry into the workforce. Work experience can be gained through any number of means, including paid or unpaid work, internships, apprenticeships, and even volunteer work. It's a great way to develop one's skills, increase one's self-assurance, and broaden one's circle of professional contacts.

Importance of Work Experience on Your CV

As much as gaining experience in your field of interest is important for you, presenting it on your CV is equally essential. Acquiring work experience earlier in your career, or even while you are studying, will always be beneficial for you in the long run. Starting a job while pursuing studies is not new, and as we dive into history, there are countless cases of people working while studying, gaining experience, learning new skills and succeeding in respective careers.

Today’s generation doesn’t shy away from starting to gain work experience before they get a real job, but what they need to understand is, how and why to show that experience in their CVs too. Niche employment marketplaces like Graduatewise.com, allows candidates to mention their work experience through various fields and categories that help employers pick out the best candidates in a hassle free manner.

Why is Experience Section Important?

This article will list out the significance of mentioning work experience in CVs while applying for internships.

1.    Experience Counts

Employers prefer candidates who have prior experience in the skills that are required for a particular job role. Mentioning experience on your CV will get more attention from employers thereby increasing your chances of getting selected. In so many cases, candidates have the benefit of getting better appraisals at their new job, just because they hold prior experience.

2.    Competitive Edge

You instantly get an upper hand while there is a cut throat competition globally, if you are experienced in any particular field. You get ahead of other candidates who may not be having any experience. Possessing any kind of experience would always be counted as an additional advantage apart from the other skill sets you hold. For reaching to the next level in your career, leaving other candidates behind, your experience plays an important role.

3.    Theory is not everything

Unless you put to practice what you studied in university, all that theory is of no use. Speaking in front of your friends as against in a meeting of 100 employees is different. That is why relying just on the standard theory is not a good idea. If you have learned a skill, it’s essential to put that skill to use, otherwise how would you test your capability? Reading about a recipe is not equal to cooking it and enjoying it. Hence practical application of your learnings is importance, and once you do that by working in an actual workplace, your value automatically increases in the market.

4.    Increase in Your Knowledge

Online courses are a great way to learn new skills, but you actually acquire them by applying them, thereby enhancing your knowledge about that particular subject, eventually making you a subject matter expert. You learn to handle clients when you work for them, you know more about time management when there are tight deadlines for projects, you learn about team work when you work with people from all arenas. This connect increases your knowledge about operating in any given environment.

5.    Self-Development

Experience helps you develop yourself in so many ways. First, you get to know and learn about your field of interest, simultaneously igniting your passion about it. Secondly, you open yourself to new opportunities out there. To add to it, there is the whole world of networking and creating new connects that help you learn people skills, which can never ever be taught through any books or classes.

When you find yourself with experience despite being a graduate, you feel confident in yourself. Mentioning all this on your CV helps you immensely in getting the desired internship, impressing your employer, understanding things better, showcasing your talent well, building your brand and value.
