Securing Your Dream Job

What to do if you get Bad Performance Review?

Your evaluation process just ended, and the results were not encouraging. Whether you were prepared for the awful news or not, it still hurts. You may be experiencing a range of emotions, including shame, sadness, shock, fear, and fury, and worry that your job security is at risk. The good news is that hope is not gone. You, too, can take on the task and make a positive difference with some hard work and determination.

What to do if you get Bad Performance Review?
Professionally speaking, an yearly performance review serves as a report card. How did your performance compare to your expectations? Have you been training well? Did you complete your assignments on time? Are you growing as an Intern?
Similar sentiments might be evoked by employee performance assessments. In the event of a negative performance evaluation, what would you do? Instead of feeling dejected, you must look on the positive side of the review. Following the below tips should help you look up instead of feeling down.

Be a good listener
Relax and settle down your nerves. Even if you're caught off guard, keep your cool and listen to what your boss has to say without becoming defensive. Listen carefully and take notes if necessary. Arguments, on the other hand, should be saved for later.
As an alternative, if your boss becomes irate or is acting unprofessionally, you might try to shift the conversation to facts and practical information instead. We recommend that you say "I appreciate the openness you have shown, but I'd want to hear some constructive criticism that would help me grow. Also, you want her to know that you're aware of the situation, and that you’re focused on finding a solution.

Don't just react, take action!
You can give yourself some time to respond to your evaluation and critiques if you're experiencing stress and caught unawares, or if you're feeling upset. You should ask for time to think things through. This will help to get your employer on your side by showing him or her that you're eager to come up with answers. You can also ask her for suggestions on what to do in the short term.

Get a grip on reality
You may or may not accept the negative review. Decide whether you want to continue your internship here, or whether you want to try somewhere else. Go with your instincts. With the kind of evaluation you received, you’d know if there are any chances of improvements from your end, or if you are still interested in making the changes.
If you feel there's no hope, then it’s time to move on. But its still suggested trying one last time. Insecure interns shouldn't opt to stay or leave a place based on fear and uncertainty. You must come from a place of strength and self-confidence. Because of fear, you will not be able to make the greatest job decisions.

It is important to learn from your errors.
When you start your internship, you may be apprehensive about your first performance review. Open the channels of communication with your supervisor from day one to avoid getting a poor review. An assessment should never be a huge surprise.
By asking for input frequently and keeping in contact with your colleagues and supervisor, you can prevent this from happening to you. The key performance indicators (KPIs) and the frequency of formal evaluations will help you understand exactly what is expected of you to succeed. Encourage your clients to provide informal feedback following a large project.
