Crafting Your Profile

How Transferable Skills Strengthen Candidates' Profile

The epidemic has altered the workplace in numerous ways, some of which are likely to be permanent. When looking for an internship or deciding on a career shift (after graduation), transferable skills can enable you to acquire a new career, no matter your current skills are relevant or not. This article will help you understand how mentioning transferable skills in your CV or while applying online can help strengthen a candidates' profile.

How Transferable Skills Strengthen Candidates' Profile

A simple fact by which all candidates and aspirants must abide is: for any job some skills would be needed. Without them there would be no worth of your studies, knowledge or excellent grades. But one cannot learn all the skills available out there. There are a few which solve several purposes, and such skills are known as transferable skills.

Competencies that are "transferable" are those that are useful in any profession or job setting. Hard transferrable skills include programming, analytical techniques, and other computer knowledge, while soft skills include things like the ability to communicate and create rapport with others.

You learn and develop them when faced with a certain situation, and later on, they might come handy during some other situations as well. They don’t have an expiry date, and the best part is, you can learn them while you go through diverse situations in your professional as well as personal life.

Examples of Transferable Skills

Some very popular transferable skills include:

  • Management
  • Communication
  • Research
  • Analytics
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork

Why are they important for your Profile?

1.    Ever-Present: They never fade, in fact the more you get to use them, the better you become at employing them in any given situation. No matter it’s your first job or an internship, once you gain them, you are always in the good books of employers.

2.    No Mandatory Degree required: You don’t always need a degree to learn these skills. With time and experience you gain them and utilise as essential. Of course there are courses as well to hone your skills better, to add to your professionalism, but don’t stress about doing them necessarily.

3.    Increased Chances of Selection: Versatile candidates are preferred by almost all employers. Who would refuse a photographer who can also do video editing plus hold good knowledge of complex technology and hardware? No one, right? So even if you lack in any given skill, the transferable skills might save you and even get better job prospects.

4.    Eligibility for Multiple Roles: With such skills, you automatically become eligible to apply for more than one type of job role, which provides you a wide room to choose and create your career in. Their presence on your CV makes you a potential candidate for employers.

Now while you may possess these skills, its equally important that you put them to good use even if you are searching for a job, or appear for an interview or during your job. For instance, if you are good at managing customers, apart from being a customer support executive, you can impart your skills to the sales team as well, which improves your career prospects.

They are important for every candidate apart from the ones they learn during receiving their education. The sooner you identify your strengths and turn them into something more useful and beneficial for employers, the better your success graph would be.
