Graduated, now what?

5 Key Factors to Research a Company before Interview

You've finished school and are searching for internship after all your hard work. The interview, however, has its own set of difficulties. The first thing you should do before an interview is research the firm. Doing homework before an interview shows that you value the company and are serious about working for them. But it also helps you understand if its the right organisation for you to start your career with.

5 Key Factors to Research a Company before Interview

If you have been selected for the interview and are supposed to appear for the same, one vital aspect would be researching well about the company. Exploring about the prospective employer gives you extra points when you sit in front of the interviewer. It is one of the best ways to prepare for any sort of interviews.

The purpose of doing so is understanding what the company does, getting to know its culture and environment, what they are looking for in the candidate, etc. It’s better to be prepared instead of staring at the interview panel blankly when asked about the company.

Some points that you as a prospective intern need to keep in mind while researching the company are listed below:

1.    Company Vision and Mission

Job seekers must get in-depth knowledge about the company’s culture, if it’s aligning with the mission and vision statements or not. Most HR teams look for the cultural fit component in any candidate because that is becoming an important criterion for hiring any employee.

As a candidate, you must make it a point to go through their website regarding their mission and vision statements, understanding what Drives them! Taking a look at its social media accounts will also help you with this particular factor, as companies these days advertise their culture heavily via social media.

 2.    Products or Services Offered

Once selected for interview, as a potential intern, it’s your job to gain more knowledge about the product or services that they are working on, giving you a better idea on what you might have to work on if you get hired. Company website is the best place to know more about such details as they are quite elaborate and user friendly, catering to all types of visitors. Companies also have their own blogs that would help you get a better idea of their business. This also helps you visualise utility of your skill set, and subsequent growth.

 3.    Management and Board of Directors

Those are usually the key people managing a company. These significant members generally have a separate page on the website conveying about their roles and achievements over the years. Most often, this bunch includes details on the CEO of the company, the key directors, VP of the company and a few important managers as well. A lot of companies dedicate a section for their complete team, especially if it is a small team. Taking a look at this detail along with browsing their LinkedIn or other Pages will help gather your thoughts on the company.

 4.    Skill Requirement by the Company

This information would be better provided to you if you look at their job posting carefully. You must read between the lines to get clarity on what the company is actually looking for in terms of skills and experience.

Every company has a Careers page on its website that would support you with more such info. Better, if you know someone in the company, reach out to them and get a grip on what the company values most in their employees.

 5.    Brand Value

To understand the brand value of the company, and its success ratio in the market, check out if they have been present at any of the seminars or corporate functions, if they have been in news for any sort of achievements, take a look at their CSR activities and the employee engagement pages for that matter.

The ‘About’ page of any company contains this data so you would be able to comprehend its involvement in external activities to enhance the business. Check out the company reviews on various portals to get an idea of how their employees fare and rate it.

When you present your company knowledge, its impresses the interviewer because it makes you seem like a thoughtful, responsible and dedicated candidate for the role offered. Employers generally do not prefer to interact with candidates that take the company info for granted and rely on the post-hiring training to know more about it. In order to grab the job, candidates need to stay alert, aware and well prepared on this front, else it would be just a job to them, and not an employee experience.
