Graduated, now what?

Its 2023 - What Must Graduates Look For In internships?

With the ever changing times employment sector has also evolved. Students are smarter now, are you also among them? Or are you someone who pays little attention to what you want out of your internship? If you come in the latter segment, then its time you think again. Below are some tips on some important factors that you should focus on while interning.

Its 2023 - What Must Graduates Look For In internships?

Gone are the days when everyone worked only for money or status. Sure money is still a motivating factor but there are several other factors that must now look important for career building for interns. Find out what graduates want most from an internship, like attractive perks and benefits as well as the chance to move up.
Your major, your skills, and your goals for your career should all be reflected in the job you choose. A student who is majoring in computer science will see their job very differently than a student who is majoring in creative writing. Graduates now, have made it clear that they need a certain set of benefits in any job they do. Do you know what you, as a graduate must be looking for in your internship? Here we will help you understand what graduates must be looking for in internships.

1) Help from peers and teachers
At least half of students who do internships prefer having a mentor to help them steer through their new career. Talk to professionals in your field who can help you build your network and give you good references for jobs. Employers respect the connections that students make in their extracurricular and professional lives.
Whether it's a boss or a co-worker, having a reliable contact can help you build a solid foundation for a successful career. Every student needs a friend who will support them and help them along the way as they work hard to reach their goals. Professional networking helps in successful recruitment. University students lack real-life experience, that's where the mentorship helps.

2) Accessibility to internal resources
Many students put a lot of value on internships that give them access to learning chances like seminars or workshops, that they are otherwise unable to do at graduate-level. Students can feel better about themselves, learn skills that are useful for their internship, and look into possible future paths. When all this can be achieved while doing internships, they feel satisfied. This also comes from the fact that not all graduates might pursue higher studies. They would rather look into their finances and get live work experience. When companies help them with internal learning tools, they pave a path for their own success.

3) Compensation
Most interns want to be paid a good pay for the time and work they put in. Many students have to work part-time or full-time jobs to pay for school and take care of other responsibilities. Internships can take up as much time as full-time jobs, so many students choose chances that pay them in addition to giving them academic credit. Today's interns want to be paid at least something for their time and work. They are even ready to go the extra mile to earn that.

4) A chance to show off your work
Many students who do an internship for a term or a year want to show their work to the public. It has been shown that giving students a place to show off their successes makes them feel more like leaders and more responsible. It's a great chance for them to show how valuable they are to the company and persuade the management that they should be on the team. An internship may give them this chance which can eventually lead to a permanent position in future.

5) Job stability
When looking for an internship, students think carefully about whether or not the job could lead to a full-time job. Students, especially those about to graduate, care a lot about job security and the chance to move up in the future. It gives them a sense of comfort and chances to grow in their careers. Large companies usually commit to such factors. But small companies are also increasingly employing different ways to incorporate intern expectations in their workplace.

6) An opportunity to set oneself apart from the crowd

It refers to a chance to distinguish oneself or stand out from others in a positive way. It implies being able to showcase unique skills, qualities, or achievements that make you different and more appealing than others. This opportunity can arise in various aspects of life, such as academics, career, business, personal relationships, or any competitive area where individuality and excellence are valued. By seizing this opportunity, one can gain recognition, create a distinct identity, and increase their chances of success and growth over a period of time.

Consider your new internship as a chance to set yourself out from the pack. Think about the next internship interview you'll be attending and what you'd like to tell the hiring manager in front of you about your expertise. Consider how the knowledge and abilities you acquire will enhance your professional reputation if employed.

7) A chance to explore potential professions

Exploring potential professions is a valuable opportunity to discover one's interests, skills, and passions. It allows individuals to gain insight into different career paths, understand job requirements, and make informed decisions about their future.
Remember, exploring potential professions is a continuous process, and it's okay to learn and pivot along the journey. Stay open-minded, curious, and proactive in seeking opportunities to explore different career paths. Employers are looking for interns in almost every field. If you choose your path smartly, utilise your qualification well, potential employers would not hesitate in offering you employment.

The main benefit of an internship is the chance to get hands-on experience in an area you might want to work in after you graduate. Try to find a job or internship that will give you practise in the real world. With the information you get from this, you'll be able to choose the best career path for you. Employers prefer candidates who are clear about what they want for their future.

8)  The possibility of acquiring new techniques

The most important thing is to hone your knowledge and put it into practise. Try to educate yourself in areas that your university courses don't cover, though. Find the software or resources that are useful for your field and master them. You will distinguish yourself as the "fast-learner" who is eager to contribute immediately after the internship, increasing your marketability. Gaining transferable skills really help. Involvement in solving problems, teamwork, awareness of trends, previous experience, all this can help you become an expert. Show some enthusiasm.

When you know know what you want out of the internship as well as the employer, the interview calls automatically increase. Once you complete graduation, placement in a good company with decent payment should be your first priority. Check out placements through university too plus the role and benefits they are offering. The pandemic has increased the availability of virtual jobs, and students must evaluate the efficacy of increased collaboration and other potential solutions. Now is the time to create career through smart thinking. Assess your skills, avoid unpaid internships, employ and look for relevant roles, understand application process for both big and small firms, show off your work experience to gain and make the most out of your dream internship.
