How to Clear a Behavioral Job Interview
Candidates will have a valid question asking, What is a Behavioral Interview? To answer them, it’s the type of interview wherein, as the name suggests, the interview panel focuses more on knowing more about the behavioral aspect of any candidate.
This is more in relation to how you faced and resolved any typical work-related situations, or something that you worked on while at a volunteer center, or while working for your university assignments.

What’s the Logic?
The logic behind this interviewing method is understanding your past behavior in certain situations that gives a purview of how you might react or function in future situations. The employer usually has an idea of what skills he is looking for while asking questions that are included in a behavioral interview.
Instead of asking you – What ‘would’ you do in such a situation? you might be asked – What ‘did’ you do in that particular situation? And vice versa. So, the difference is of past and future. Candidates need to keep their memories intact, stay aware and answer as best as they can.
What all is covered in this type of Interviews?

Let’s take a look below at the type of questions asked in Behavioral Job Interview.
1.    Have you handled a difficult time while you worked at the NGO? How?
2.    Tell us about the time when there was too much work pressure and how did you effectively work over it?
3.    How do you handle challenges?
4.    What have you done to reach your goals?
5.    Describe when you had to work on multiple projects/assignments at a time and how you handled it?
6.    How do you manage when you have to work post official hours?
7.    Describe when your implementation backfired and how you managed it?

Realise that these questions will have follow-up questions as well, since the employer is trying to understand your point of view and your choice of treatment of various situations.

How to prepare for such an interview?
The best way is to keep a check on all the types of jobs that you have done till now, all the types of adverse situations that you have handled while you were interning somewhere, or were at your university while creating projects, etc. When asked about the same, try and answer in a story form.

Why Storytelling?
Because stories are always an interesting way to explain what you have been through and how you have managed in any sort of conditions, good or bad. Go through the job description and prepare your answers in accordance to the current company requirements. It’s possible that you might not be aware of the questions to be asked but getting an idea about typical questions should work.
When you are asked any question, and you don’t get it, or it comes as a surprise to you, it’s always better to ask for a clarification. The employer would never hesitate to tell you more about it so don’t hold back. Instead of fumbling, it’s good to ask questions. A very basic format that you should follow to answer such question is:
1.    Pick up a certain situation.
2.    What did the situation comprise?
3.    What did you do to work on that situation?
4.    How did you resolve/accomplish it? – The outcome that is.

These are pretty basic questions asked during an interview, but candidates usually focus on the technical part of the job description more, sidelining this aspect of the interview process.
To all the candidates who are to appear for interviews, always take care that your conduct and behavior forms an integral part of hiring you, so please pay attention on everything that you have done or achieved till now, so you can speak about them when they really require an audience.
