Grabbing Interview Opportunities

What Companies Won't Inform You About the Interview Process

Despite first impressions, most employers are looking out for the best interests of the company and the employees. Although though reputable businesses want you to have a positive application and interview experience, there are some details they won't divulge even if you ask nicely. Let's call it what it is: a closely guarded secret. Pay ranges, applicant war strategies, and HR strategies used internally. These are company secrets that the company then deploys to attempt to promote you something. Below are some lesser known lies that companies wont inform you about their interview process.

What Companies Won't Inform You About the Interview Process
Even though looking for a job has never been a picnic, the process seems to have come straight out of a dystopian book in recent years. Preparing for a job search is now like preparing for a military campaign. The amount of video interviews, live projects, and other work you have to do before you get an offer is hard. Even worse is that candidates aren't always treated well. Even after multiple interviews, it's bad enough when a possible employer vanishes without a trace. Then, what happens if you find out later that the hiring managers and recruiters lied to you?

Hiring managers and recruiters can lie to you for the same reasons that police can lie to you during an interrogation. That's because it's hard to hold an employer responsible for a lie that is vague. Most job seekers are afraid to question anything during an interview for fear of losing the job. But knowledge is power, so being ready for any possible lies during an interview is half the battle. Here are some of the most common lies that hiring managers and recruiters tell during interviews:

Pay and benefits.
The most surprising thing you might run into at work is an employer who lies about pay and perks. Most of the time, these lies involve shady maths, like telling you that your level of experience puts you at the bottom of a pay range. Also, it is common to count unpaid overtime or bonuses as if they were part of the regular salary. Many companies describe their benefits packages with vague words like "competitive" or "robust,". They point out the one part of the package that is really great while glossing over the rest.
The key is to ask clear, specific questions and back them up with other research. You could also talk to current and former employees who have held similar jobs. Ask them about their experiences with pay and benefits.

Putting your CV in a "file."
Even though recruiters and hiring managers are required by law to keep records of what they do, including the stack of CVs they get, this is a common way to get turned down.
It sounds like you have a future with the company, but in reality, they will forget about you as soon as they hit send on the email. If they're telling the truth, there's nothing to lose by ignoring this information and going on as planned.

I'm sorry if I'm going to make you work too hard.
It's common knowledge that employers don't care at all how long you look for a job.
They take multiple interviews that last for weeks.  They give you complicated projects that make you feel like they are using your candidature just for free professional advice. So everything about the process says, "We really don't care about your time."

It is perfectly fine to work from home.
Remote work is a controversial topic right now. Some employers know that potential employees want a hybrid arrangement that lets them work from home at least sometimes, but they think this is so the employee can "steal" a little time and take a nap while getting paid. During the hiring process, some companies will tell you that you can work from home some or all of the time or that you only need to be in the office X days a week, only to change their minds later.
