Grabbing Interview Opportunities

How to Answer If the Interviewer wants to know Something Apart from Your CV

Interviewers are interested in learning more about you than just what's on your CV. An open-ended query like "Tell me something about yourself that isn't on your CV" will help the interviewer get a sense of your personality and interests. If you're asked this, pick out the most impressive thing about yourself that isn't immediately apparent from your CV.
How to Answer If the Interviewer wants to know Something Apart from Your CV
Interviewers often ask, 'Tell me something not on your resume,' to understand your personality beyond your professional qualifications. For example, if an interviewer asks you, "Tell me something about yourself that isn't on your CV," they are looking to know more about you.
This is your chance to share personal traits or experiences not listed on your CV that highlight your suitability for the role. Ideally, if they ask you this question, it’s either because they find your CV inadequate to hire you, or another way of asking, "Tell us about yourself".

Why Do Interviewers Ask This Question?

The interviewer wants to know more about the person behind the CV. A suitable fit for the position and the organisation will be determined by your interviewer based on your answers to these questions.
In the end, they want to know that you'll not only be able to do the work duties, but you'll also be the right culture fit.

Effective Ways to Respond

It really gives the candidate a chance to speak more about their personal traits and characteristics that would make them a successful employee. You can answer the question in a number of different ways.

1.   Highlight a Strength Not on Your CV

Be sure to make a list of your main talents before every interview. When asked a question like this, you have the chance to talk about a strength that isn't obvious from your CV. The job you're interviewing for, for example, could need you to be able to talk in public. While working, you may not have had the opportunities to talk in front of large audiences.
When asked about your university debate team or group project presentation skills, you may say that you spoke at a charity event or won a sales contest while an undergraduate. Consider highlighting your desire to go the additional mile and problem-solving abilities.

2.    Share Personal Traits

You should put a list of your accomplishments and the skills you used to get them on your CV. Personal qualities, on the other hand, like work ethic and loyalty, are harder to put on a CV.

3.    Express Your Interest in the Role

As much as they care about your knowledge and abilities, employers also care about your reason for taking on the role. It's an opportunity to explain why you're interested in the position.

4.    Discuss Relevant Personal Experiences

Let's not forget about your hobbies and interests, which may say good things about you or make you stand out from other candidates.
This strategy works best when your job-specific skills and goals have already been clearly explained.

Tips for Crafting a Strong Response

•    Keep it connected to the work, and professional. Get a little personal with your responses, but do not go overboard. Avoid wandering too far from the abilities and qualities that demonstrate your suitability for the position.
•    Be genuine and true to who you are and what you believe. To gauge your personality and suitability to the job, interviewers use this question. Don't be afraid to tell them the truth and let them know who you are.
•    Communicate your strengths to the panel. Using an intuitive skill or one that isn't shown on your CV is an impressive way for answering this question.
No matter how clear this question is, it doesn't imply that any response will be an acceptable one!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Take a moment to collect your ideas before answering. In your reply, you don't want to go on and on and speak an essay. As much as feasible, keep it concise and well-organized. Value their time by being succinct and getting straight to the topic.
  • It's not an encouragement to let your guard down or unprofessionally manner. Keep your language, manner, and tales professional at all times when at work.
  • Avoid oversharing. It's OK to talk about your interests and passions, but keep in mind that the interviewer is mainly concerned about the employee productivity, not your interests and ambitions. If you're a candidate, don't reveal too much personal information or share interests or hobbies that reflect negatively on you.
  • Keep your spirits up during the interview. Whenever possible, avoid expressing anything negative about your previous boss(es), co-workers, or employers. Employers think that if they are treated the same as you, they will be treated the same way. People don't want to work with someone who will talk about them behind their backs later in their careers.
