After completing your academic studies, starting an internship is a key step in your career planning as an intern. To succeed, it's important to set long-term career goals during your internship. And to accomplish this, you must first establish certain objectives. Along with short term goals, you must have long term goals too to succeed in your career.

You undoubtedly have a lot to manage if you're a new intern. There are bosses and colleagues who look up to you and your performance minutely, so you’ve got to impress them. There are trainings to attend to and excel at. These are certainly solid cases of professional goals, but they are short term goals, as a professional, you’ve got to think long term, right?
A lot many times, you don’t know about your future career path. Either your first job or internship might be the perfect fit, or you’d struggle and understand what’s better for you. In any case, you should want to develop certain long-term goals to set your career in the proper direction.
Some general long term goals that you should plan out for are listed below for you. Take a look to get a clear insight into what requires succeeding professionally as well as personally.

1.    Explore your Desired Industry

One of your primary goals should be to determine what industry matches your aspirations best throughout the early phases of your career. An internship is best the way to explore various career options. It’s very much possible you’d want to do something else because you feel you aren’t made for
It becomes tougher to change industries at a later stage in your career, hence it’s advisable to make decisions early on, during the initial years of your career launch. Make goals that you can attain at least within 5-7 years.

2.    Choose your Education Carefully

You may be required to finish particular courses, certificate programs or training in order to thrive in your profession, depending upon your profession of choice. Set a goal to obtain the expertise or qualification within a certain time frame to prevent getting held back in your career.
Nevertheless, consider carefully the reasons to graduate and if the degree will truly impact your future positively, before you register and perhaps take on student loan for the same. You don't want to get frustrated later because your education doesn’t lead to better career opportunities.

3.    Become an Expert in Your Field

In order to be successful, make yourself more visible as an intern. Just because you are new in the company is no reason to stay backstage. Show your boss by launching an initiative, that you have the managerial ability.
Work on a project for a group? Be the one to submit data and presentation. Register at a professional group or organisation and attend industry events on a frequent basis. Build a strong web presence to display your skills. That means you should be expanding your activities on social media.

4.    Align Life Goals with Career Goals

Connect your dreams with your profession. Think over the type of lifestyle you want to maintain in the next five years. Do you want to stay in your home town? Look and build your career accordingly. Want to explore cities, pay off loans, have a big house, whatever it may be, your life goals should be in alignment with your work, and how it's going to help you achieve those goals.
