Graduated, now what?

Adding References to Your CV

Knowing how to add references to your CV can be crucial in securing a job offer. If you do them well, they can give you the advantage you need. A good character review from a credible source could be what sets you distinct from other applicants who are just as eligible as you.

Adding References to Your CV
References are people or your contacts whose details you mention in your CV, so the employers can cross-check or get further info about you before offering you the job.
Reference checking is a small process but an important one as it places an employers’ trust in you, especially if you are an Intern or a Graduate.
CV references help confirm your skills, education, and attitude, providing employers with positive feedback. Employers expect honest answers from your contacts. It’s important that you mention only about people whom you consider trustworthy.

Details to Include for Each Reference

For any person that candidates use for employer reference check, they should mention the following details:
1.    Full Name.
2.    Address.
3.    Contact Number.
4.    Email ID.
5.    Professional Title.
6.    Current Company/Institution.

How to Choose the Right References for Your CV

1.    Add details of the people whom you know well, or whom you can trust with your employer information. We do not want people responding vaguely to an employer call. This is about your job after all.
2.    Select someone who is aware of your working style, the skills you hold, and the certifications you’ve completed.
3.    Mention those who can vouch for your personal attributes, your behavioural aspects, trustworthiness and team work capabilities.
4.    You can name people who are working in same job roles or internships as yours, be it full time or part-time.
5.    Avoid mentioning names of your family members or friends as references. They are not considered authentic even though they might be the ones knowing you best.
6.    Mention two or three names for this purpose, not more than three.

How to Prepare Your References for a Reference Check

1.    Make sure you take prior permission from your contacts you will mention on your CV. Use their names only if they agree for the same.
2.    Once they agree, always verify with their current and working contact information, along with their current address, and work place details.
3.    Get an idea about the best times to call them or connect over email for the required info by employer. You don’t want anyone accusing you with a fake reference contact, nor does your contact want to get disturbed at an inappropriate time.
4.    If possible let them know about the calls to be made for the intended reason and inform them about some of your details or share CV if possible.
5.    Once they are contacted, follow up with the references, making sure you express your gratitude for their assistance.

Who You Can List as References on Your CV

1.    Your colleagues at your last volunteer centre or anyone you worked with while in college.
2.    Your professors who can vouch for your behavioural traits and knowledge.
3.    Your mentor/s (if any) with whom you spend a substantial amount of time. They could know a lot about you and your traits and would give a positive feedback for your capabilities.
4.    Any customer you served while doing vocational jobs, and with whom you are on good terms.

One important point to keep in mind is that the details in your CV and the information provided by the reference contacts mustn’t differ. If they differ, or something negative or some important unknown information comes out, your candidature might land in danger.
Hence, first, do not lie to the employer about yourself, and second, have trustworthy contacts, who would help you get the job rather than ruining things for you.

We hope the above information would help you create the reference section mindfully. If you have anything more to add to this, please share in the comments section below.
