Crafting Your Profile

Importance of Social Media Links on Your CV

By showcasing your expertise, commenting on business trends, and networking with other experts, social networking sites may be wonderful venues to enhance your self image. Including social media links on your CV can help prospective employers learn more about your professional background and digital footprint.
Importance of Social Media Links on Your CV
These days, you would find very few people who do not have any social media accounts. Those people probably might not require to be on social media, but fresh graduates sure do require. We can confidently say that holding social media accounts gives a new face to our professional identities.
Earlier, just clearing interviews was enough to get selected. Of course, it’s the same today too, but with a twist. Your future employer would now expect the links/handles for your social media accounts on your CV. Recruiters review your professional social media profiles to gain insights into your skills, experiences, and industry engagement. The below article will help you understand the importance of mentioning your social presence on the CV.

Understanding the Social Media section

This section would contain information and links to the online platforms. Especially the ones where you may have mentioned your skills, or share your knowledge with fellow account holders.
These usually include LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter, even Instagram. The links, names of SM platforms are placed under the Contact Information section in the professional profile through which the employers can open the links. The Importance of Social Media Profiles on your CV.

1.    Let the employers know you better:

Why make it tough for the hiring managers to know more about you? More than 80% of them would google the shortlisted candidates. That could be you too, so rather than them having to choose the real YOU, why not simply mention your social media links in the CV? The recruiters would really appreciate this.

2.    Show your Skills:

Your social media presence certainly would have your skill sets present in one way or another. If you are a blogger, your website link would help recruiter understand your talent, and capabilities. Similarly, if you are a coder, sharing your GitHub link will help you get selected quickly. So showing your skills online is considered a smart move.

3.    Are you Culturally Fit? :

Apart from being an excellent candidate for the role, would you prove to be a good team member too? Life beyond your work also shows your personality. Employers often pay much attention to that. They can only do it by going through your profiles, understanding more about you.
One vital point to remember is, before putting up your personal social profiles, make sure to delete any sensitive data, information or posts that might make you an unwanted candidate. You also have the right to keep them private. In-fact, try and include only those profiles that show your skills, knowledge, assignments, workshops attended, and/or previous experience (if any).

Social Media Profiles to Include on your CV

Now, it’s a professional profile that is forwarded to the employers. Of course, they are also interested majorly in your skills and expertise. Hence, you must refrain yourself from mentioning the unnecessary social media profiles on your CV. So which ones you can include?
1.    LinkedIn – It’s kinda mandatory these days, with a proper photo. LinkedIn profiles gives a better glimpse into the work you have done during or after your graduation, or about your internship experience, and about much more that might not be included in the CV. So having a LinkedIn profile is pretty important.
2.    Facebook – It’s not officially important but as long as you post anything informative and viewer friendly it should be there on the CV.
3.    Twitter – It’s an informative site where users can express and share their views, new trends, relevant info about their own field, even have good conversations. Share the link if you use it responsibly, else no harm in skipping it.
4.    Blogs – If you have your own blog or website, related to your niche, be it photography, stories, design, technology, etc., do mention it on your CV. It always helps employers learn more about you and your chances of selection increases.

Ultimately, it all comes down to your profession. As long as your social media platforms are showcasing your professional aptitude, your passions, some productive channelling of your efforts and knowledge, you should always put that down on your profile. Also double check if the profile links are working correctly. Some platforms that you can definitely avoid mentioning could be Snapchat and TikTok. They are majorly used for amusement purposes. We doubt they would give any idea of your area of expertise in a constructive manner.
