To shake someone's hand when you first meet them seems like a natural, uncomplicated way to show your appreciation. When you first meet the hiring manager and when the interview is over, it is customary to shake hands. This one action can shape both your first and last impressions. Your handshake can either enhance or detract from your professional reputation.

Why a Handshake Matters in a Job Interview

Many of us shake hands automatically and unconsciously. Yet, if you have poor handshake habits, it may be helpful to break down the fundamentals of a handshake in order to improve. It's best to avoid the bone crusher and go for a solid, palm-to-palm handshake with the interviewer instead. The optimal number of pumps is one to two, and each should last for only three seconds.

Handshake Mistakes to Avoid

An unimpressive handshake does the same. LinkedIn claims that a limp hand is a sign of shyness. Instead, avoid the temptation to use a crushing handshake to establish your superiority. Instead of showing that you have a strong character, you come across as arrogant and domineering.
Avoid placing your other hand on the recruiting manager's arm or shoulder or pumping their hand hard. Avoid prolonged shaking; it always ends badly. A professional handshake is always neat, crisp, and solid.
