Answering Interview Questions about Career Goals
At any given stage of ones’ career, they are always asked by interviewers: What are your Career Goals? This leads to deep thinking, but one must be ready with their answer instead of thinking about it while sitting in front of the interview panel.

What does the Interviewer wants to learn?
A pretty critical question that allows the panel to get insights into your professional ambitions and how you plan to fulfil it. They also wish to understand if you genuinely would be working with their company for a long time since training a fresher is costly affair. They would expect better return on investment from you.

Your responses would help them trust you and hire you without second thoughts. Try to understand where they are coming from. Also try to evaluate yourself by doing a SWOT Analysis, so you are aware of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities in front of you, and the threats for your career.

How to answer the questions about Career Goals?
1.    Start with your Short Term Goals:
They range from 6-12 months and are easy enough to make. Explain a little about them, their purpose, and the outcome you expect from achieving those goals. Thereafter, you can also speak a little about any long term goals to be achieved.

2.    Summarise your goal achievement steps:
By doing so, you would be able to convince recruiters about your seriousness towards the plans, and how they would be a benefit for the company too.

3.    Keep them Job Role Specific:
Understand the job role, and explain your goals in consent with the job role you have applied for. Applying for the role of a software engineer and having goals of a photographers 5 years down the line won’t help your cause, hence be thoughtful.

4.    Avoid having fixed goals:
There might be twist and turns in your journey to achieve those goals so avoid hampering on the deadlines for your goal achievements. It’s essential to be able to answer about your career goals because ideally no one gets serious about aimless candidates. You might be interviewed but you for sure may not get selected if you are not goal oriented.

Before appearing for the interview, spend some time on this question, sit with yourself and think about what you want to do 5 years down the line and how will this job help you achieve that. Simultaneously, what would be your contributions to the company that could be a win-win situation for both of you?
