Answering, “What Are Your Strengths?” in an Interview

The qualities an interviewer is seeking when they ask you to describe your greatest strengths: They're probing you to find out if you have confidence in your abilities. They're trying to gauge your level of realism. The hiring manager is interested in learning whether or not your skills are a good fit for the position. But that's not all, answering, “What Are Your Strengths?” in an interview requires much more practice. Read below.

Well, you cannot brag, but you have to sell yourself, right? So, answering this question may not be that easy, but there is no reason to panic as well. The simple trick that you have to follow is, chart out and mention those positives that could be a big benefit for the job role you are being interviewed for. Once you are able to align your strengths with your job, even a simple positive like, ‘I say happy all the time’ can work in your favor.

Try and not think too much while answering this question because the employer assumes you to be a thoughtful person who knows what they are like. Also speaking confidently, and without using vague terminology like probably, maybe, good enough would be the best way to deal with this.

Let’s see how you can actually answer this question, “What Are Your Strengths?” in an Interview, so you go through to the next round and impress your interviewers. Since this seems to be a pretty general question asked almost all candidates, you should keep a check on what your strengths actually are, on the basis of your skills, and categorise them. Categorising helps in explaining your traits better. You can classify them into:

1.    Individual Skills: Skills that showcase your internal qualities like your confidence, dependability, accountability, your flexible stance, teamwork, etc. can come under this head.
2.    Versatile Qualities: The traits that will always stay with you no matter what the job is, like communication skills, problem-solving skills, solution oriented approach, people and situation management, your exposure to data and analytics would come under this head.
3.    Knowledge Based Traits: The skills that showcase your technical abilities, your education and its learnings, language commands, etc come under this head.

There are more skills and qualities that can be a part of such strengths like:
1.    Creativity
2.    Punctuality
3.    Dedication
4.    Hard work
5.    Smart work
6.    Honesty
7.    Determination
8.    Efficiency
9.    Perfectionism
10.    Clarity


 The list may have some more words to it, but you must be able to ascertain that they sync with the job role you are interviewing for. Adding the instances showing the usage of these qualities in your past, while you explain them, would add more weightage to the whole point.

Some important points to keep in mind while answering the question:

1.    Always reply implying that you have more room for improvement and that you are constantly working on it.

2.    Keep the answer interesting instead of speaking about it blandly. Learning the art of storytelling would help you with forming clear answers.

3.    Staying aware of self and noticing ones’ achievements forms a big part of your strengths, in fact staying aware of self is itself a forte and should not be taken for granted.

4.    Stay honest and do not fake speak about your goodness. The interviewer will instantly see through your lie and that will backfire for you.
Once you speak out mindfully on this subject, even you would get to know more about yourself. Answering with conviction and honesty will help you land the job so always keep in mind, no matter how simple the question looks, your answers must be well curated since they exhibit your personality to a large extent.
