Grabbing Interview Opportunities

Body Language Tips for Female Candidates to Ace Interviews

Similar to any other type of interview, the key to success is in the forethought and practise you put in before the big day. Nevertheless, women may need to pay much closer attention to how they present themselves verbally, emotionally, and physically. In the right context, assertiveness does not imply superiority or rudeness. Instead, a woman's expertise and competence can show through when she presents herself with confidence and strength when describing her qualifications for a post. That's the kind of thing that really stands out to HR reps.

Body Language Tips for Female Candidates to Ace Interviews
Let’s be honest here. Women require more efforts to get shortlisted for the job roles than men. It’s not that they are less talented but due to certain non-verbal indications, employers tend to pay less attention towards women applicants. It’s tricky but nothing that cannot be fixed. Both men and women, when given opportunities, perform to the best of their capabilities.
But this article majorly focuses on what female candidates need to pay attention to, in order to ace any interviews. A lot of this comes from understanding the non-verbal communication that are considered mute signals that expresses volumes. The following tips on implementing the non-verbal communication will help you win the interview rounds.

1.    Use your Hands:
Do not sit closed off like a timid person. Sit straight and bold. While answering or interacting with the panel, you’re your hands, arms and shoulders that show your confidence and power.
It shows you know what you are talking about. Instead using your elbows create space for yourself and making a mountain with your hands shows positive attitude.

2.    Appropriate Eye-Contact:
Maintain a two-second eye contact while having professional conversations or while in a meeting. Maintaining this contact makes you appear sincere and attentive towards their talks.
Instead of looking in all directions and expressing your anxiety or boredom won’t help in interviews. Hence, follow this two-second (not less, not more) rule to hold your audiences’ attention.

3.    Be Sure of Yourself:
While you speak, avoid stuttering or doubting your words. Remain assured that whatever you are speaking about is correct, even if it hold errors. Tone matters a lot so instead of speaking at a high pitch (shows your anxiety), or speaking very low, dull (shows lack of confidence or fear), talk in a levelled tone, with clarity, with equal spacing of words, so the panel understands your responses. Talking too fast or too slow also would be a negative so take few deep breaths and calm yourself before answering.

4.    Stand Erect:
Many women tend to stand flabbily, but that won’t work in a professional set up. While you appear for an interview, stand erect, straight without stooping your shoulders or weighing down on just one leg. Walk properly, even enter the room without a bend. A stable standing posture is considered sharp. People take you seriously if you pay attention to your overall posture.

5.    A little Smile Please:
Women tend to use their facial expressions more than anyone else. But you don’t have to do that in a discussion. Just an occasional smile, not a huge laugh mind you, a decent smile and nod to show your acknowledgement of the questions or the points of discussions.
At the end of conversation, don’t forget to thank the panel with a smile. Your optimism in spite of how the interview went would surely keep you in their good books.

A lot of this is applies to men too but female candidates need to recognise them more. With just a few simple tricks, they can win over the panel and easily grab their dream jobs. Being a female candidate you need not worry but carry yourself with utmost confidence. That's all it takes to rule the world.
